The Systems Compass

Your symptoms are not random. They’re your body’s way of guiding us to the source.

Chronic infections like Lyme Disease, Bartonella, Babesia, or Epstein-Barr virus may lead to multi-system disruption. That’s why we use a holistic diagnostic model, ‘The Systems Compass’  to guide your recovery.

This method allows us to map out the interconnected systems being affected and develop a treatment path that supports healing at the core.

At Dr Finlay’s Private Practice, we offer evidence-based, holistic medical care designed for individuals navigating complex, unresolved, or misunderstood health issues. Whether you are facing persistent fatigue, neurological symptoms, chronic infections, or immune dysfunction, our services are built around you, your history, your body, and your healing journey.

We combine Functional Medicine, advanced diagnostics, and holistic treatment planning to uncover and address the deeper imbalances driving your symptoms – even if you’ve been told “everything is normal” or “there’s nothing more to do”.

What We Treat

Lyme Disease & Vector-Bourne Illnesses

Advanced testing and targeted protocols for Bartonella, Borreilia, Babesia, co-infections, and related immune or neurological issues. Designed for those with persistent symptoms and limited answers.

Chronic Fatigue & Post-Viral Syndromes

Fatigue may have many components, we investigate bacterial, viral and metabolic causes of energy depletion and other symptoms in ME/CFS. We offer personalised support based on genetic testing, clinical assessments, mental state and nutritional status. We identify root drivers such as mitochondrial dysfunction, stealth infections, or inflammatory overload.

Autoimmune Conditions & Immune Dysregulation

It’s common for people suffering from co-infections to develop autoimmune reactions as the immune system can become hypersensitive, especially in people with a family history of hypermobility. This can lead to Hashimoto’s, Arthritis, or drive SLE. We find treating the causes usually downregulates immune reactivity without the need for pharmaceutical immune suppression and can restore normal function.

Mould Illness & Environmental Toxicity

Patients with immune problems are more likely to be sensitive to mould, heavy metals and environmental toxins. Testing and managing these issues can unburden the whole system and optimise your metabolism. This may allow faster healing and recovery to occur.

Hormonal & Thyroid Imbalances

Fatigue usually involves some form of hormonal impact, eg, thyroid or adrenal dysfunction. Stress hormones can suppress the immune system. Therefore targeting these areas can improve symptoms.

Comprehensive Testing & Root-Cause Diagnostics

Access to advanced labs including GI-MAP, Vector-borne infection panels, mycotoxin screens, neurotransmitter and hormone testing, metabolomics and more – to build a clear, evidence-backed understanding of your health.

Cognitive Dysfunction and Neuroinflammation

We treat the root causes of cognitive dysfunction by targeting pathways known to reduce neuroinflammation and optimise nerve function. We focus on co-infection treatment, nutrition, gut-microbiome, adrenal support and neurotransmitter production.

Detoxification Issues and Chemical Sensitivity

A metabolism under stress can contribute to congestion of metabolic pathways resulting in symptoms relating to slow detoxification. We test for genetic factors and try to bypass or optimise these pathways to improve overall function.

Gut-brain Axis Imbalances and Microbiome Disruption

With gut dysbiosis comes downregulations of neurotransmitter production and negative feedback through the autonomic nervous system. We use in depth biome testing and aim to rebalance this system through nutritional therapy and autonomic therapy such as breath work and other devices.

Unexplained Systemic Inflammation or Pain

Our in-depth testing reveals signs of inflammation confirming the clinical picture which may include chronic pain. If previous inflammatory marker testing has been negative we identify inflammatory drivers and work to rebalance the system which in time will improve pain and other inflammatory symptoms.

Here’s What Our Patients Have to Say

My daughter was recommended to Dr Finlay’s initially to help with Long Covid and, with their systematic elimination of other possible causes and comprehensive testing, to treat chronic Lyme disease and co-infections.

I chose to see Dr Grimston as I wanted to see a doctor as soon as possible and I was not disappointed. If it were not for her caring, holistic and thorough approach to my daughter’s very complex medical issues, we would still be in the dark and, she, in increasing pain with no solution in sight.

Dr Grimston has been there for us, responding to our concerns speedily, above and beyond normal consultations, with warmth and genuine concern for my daughter’s wellbeing in a bid to get her the correct treatment for the best possible outcome. I highly recommend both Dr Grimston and the practice in general.

Patient Review

I saw Dr Grimston to discuss my Lyme diagnosis. It was an amazing experience of being thoroughly listened to and heard in detail by someone who understands conventional and functional medicine.

Not only that, she was also very warm and caring, so I was able to be open emotionally as well as factually.

We had an hour which was a decent length of time and Dr Grimston managed this smoothly to fit in everything without in any way rushing me.

FAQs

Can I have Lyme Disease even if I don’t remember a tick bite?

Yes. While ticks are the primary vector, not everyone recalls a tick bite, and many cases occur without a visible rash or memory of exposure. Research also explores the possibility of transmission through other biting insects or congenital transfer, though these are less well understood. That’s why clinical diagnosis — not just tick history — is vital.

Why do my symptoms fluctuate so much?

Infections like Lyme disease can disrupt your immune and nervous systems, leading to unpredictable flares. These waves can be triggered by stress, hormones, co-infections, or detox responses.

What if I’ve already done lots of tests?

We will review your previous work and only suggest additional testing if needed. Our goal is to integrate your full history, not start from scratch.

Can Lyme Disease cause long-term symptoms?

Chronic Lyme disease may lead to persistent symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, neurological issues, and cognitive dysfunction — even months or years after the original infection. However this is a matter for clincial assesment and a wide range of opinions exist on this contentious illness.

What is functional medicine for Lyme disease?

Functional medicine looks beyond symptoms to identify and address the root causes of illness. In the case of Lyme disease, this includes evaluating immune function, co-infections, gut health, detox pathways, and nervous system regulation.

How is chronic Lyme disease diagnosed?

Traditional testing may miss chronic or late-stage infections. We choose the most relevant testing options alongside your clinical history to assess immune response, inflammation, co-infections and other biomarkers which may have been overlooked in conventional care.

Is it possible to recover from chronic Lyme disease?

Yes – with the right, holistic and personalised care. While recovery can be complex, many patients see significant improvement through integrative treatment plans targeting infection, inflammation and whole-body healing.

What are co-infections with Lyme disease?

Common co-infections include Bartonella, Babesia, Ehrlichia, Mycoplasma, and others. These often accompany Borrelia infections and can intensify or prolong symptoms, requiring tailored treatment.

Why do I feel worse with treatment?

This may be due to a Herxheimer reaction — a temporary flare-up of symptoms caused by microbial die-off. We help reduce these effects by supporting detoxification and adjusting treatment intensity.

Can Lyme disease affect hormones or the thyroid?

Yes. Lyme and other chronic infections can interfere with the HPA axis, thyroid function, and hormone regulation. Many patients experience mood changes, fatigue, or menstrual cycle disruptions. We assess and support these systems comprehensively.

Do you treat Long Covid or reactivated viruses like Epstein-Barr (EBV)?

Yes. Many of our clients present with overlapping issues like Long Covid, EBV, or mould exposure. These can act as co-triggers or exacerbate Lyme symptoms, so we always evaluate the broader picture.
