Smear tests (formally known as cervical screenings) are quick tests performed by a nurse or doctor that can help prevent cervical cancers. During the test, your cervix – the opening to your womb – is swabbed, some cells are removed, and this sample is sent away to the lab to be tested. The test can detect the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes to your cells which can in some cases turn into cancer.
If no HPV is found in your cells, you’ll be invited back for your next smear test in 3-5 years depending on your age. If HPV is detected in your tested cells, you’ll be invited for an examination called a colposcopy for further investigation. If there are no abnormal changes to your cells found at your colposcopy, you’ll be invited back for your next smear test in a year. In some cases, cell changes can be detected which requires a procedure to remove them.
All women over the age of 25 will be offered smear tests – every 3 years until you are 49, and every 5 years after that until you are 64.
There can be lots of nervousness around cervical screenings, and we know lots of people can put off having their smear test due to worries about the process or embarrassment.
